Top Lakes for a Day Trip from Munich

Munich sits at the doorstep of the Bavarian Alps, and that geography comes with a spectacular bonus - dozens of lakes within easy driving distance. Some are tiny hidden pools tucked behind mountain ridges. Others stretch for kilometres, rimmed by villages that look like they were painted onto the landscape. The hardest part isn't finding a lake worth visiting. It's choosing just one.
What follows is a guide to the best lakes reachable from Munich in a single day - each offering something slightly different from the last ,and all of them worth the fuel.

Lake Tegernsee

About 50 kilometres south of Munich, Lake Tegernsee feels like stepping into a postcard that someone forgot to exaggerate. The water is impossibly clear, the mountains press close on both sides, and the town of Tegernsee itself manages to be charming without trying too hard.

What makes it special is the combination of accessibility and beauty. The drive takes under an hour, and once there the options range from swimming in designated areas to hiking trails that circle the entire lake. The Tegernsee brewery - attached to a former monastery - serves some of the best beer in Bavaria, which is saying something in a region that takes beer extremely seriously.

For those who prefer a slower pace, the lakeside promenade connects the towns of Tegernsee, Rottach-Egern, and Bad Wiessee. Walking it in full takes a few hours but never feels long. The mountains hovering above keep the scenery interesting at every turn.

Starnberger See

This is Munich's backyard lake - so close that some residents treat it as an extension of the city's park system. At just 30 kilometres from the centre, Starnberger See can be reached by S-Bahn train, making it the simplest option for those without a car.
But convenience isn't its only selling point. This is one of Germany's largest lakes, and its western shore in particular has a quiet, almost secretive feel. The memorial cross marking the spot where King Ludwig II died under mysterious circumstances in 1886 adds a touch of dark history to an otherwise serene setting. Rowing boats can be rented at several points along the shore. The sunsets from here, with the Alps visible in the distance on clear days rank among the finest in the region.

Ammersee

Sitting just west of Starnberger See, Ammersee often gets overlooked by visitors who stop at its more famous neighbour. That's a mistake. Ammersee has a wilder, less manicured feel - the kind of place where reeds grow tall and the shoreline isn't always perfectly groomed.

  • Visit Andechs Monastery perched on a hill above the lake - famous for its dark beer and panoramic views
  • Take a steamboat cruise that stops at several villages around the water
  • Swim at the Strandbad in Herrsching, one of the longest lakeside beaches in Bavaria
  • Explore the artists' village of Diessen, known for ceramics and the baroque Marienmünster church
The atmosphere here leans more local than tourist. Weekend barbecues along the shore, families splashing in the shallow water, sailors catching the afternoon breeze - it's Bavaria at its most unpretentious.

Chiemsee

Known as the "Bavarian Sea," Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria and it lives up to the nickname. The water stretches so far that on hazy days the opposite shore disappears entirely. Two islands sit in the middle - Herreninsel and Fraueninsel - and both are worth the ferry ride.

Herreninsel holds Ludwig II's most ambitious project: a palace modelled after Versailles that was never finished. The completed rooms are jaw-dropping in their excess, with a hall of mirrors and gold-leaf everything. Fraueninsel is smaller, home to a working Benedictine convent and a handful of houses that make it feel like a village frozen in time.
The drive from Munich takes about an hour and the lake towns of Prien and Bernau offer enough restaurants and cafes to fill any remaining gaps in the day. Chiemsee rewards those who linger - rushing through it would be a crime.

Walchensee

If Alpine drama is what calls, Walchensee delivers. Tucked between steep mountain slopes about 75 kilometers south of Munich, this lake has a colour that shifts between deep emerald and Caribbean turquoise depending on the light. It doesn't look like it belongs in Germany.

The lake sits at 800 meters elevation, which means the water stays cold even in summer. That doesn't stop swimmers, though the real draw for many visitors is the combination of water and peaks.
A cable car from the nearby village of Kochel ascends the Herzogstand, and the view from the top - looking down at both Walchensee and neighboring Kochelsee - is one of the finest panoramas in all of Bavaria. Windsurfers and kitesurfers love this spot too. The thermal winds that funnel through the valley create reliable conditions from late morning onward.

Eibsee

At the foot of Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze, Eibsee is the kind of lake that makes people stop talking mid-sentence. The water is crystal clear ,dotted with tiny islands, and surrounded by dense forest that gives way to raw Alpine rock.

  • The circular hiking trail around the lake runs approximately 7 kilometres and takes about 2 hours
  • Parking fills up fast on summer weekends - arriving before 9 AM is strongly recommended
  • Paddle-board and row boat rentals are available at the eastern shore
  • The Zugspitze cable car station sits a 5-minute walk from the lake
The drive from Munich takes roughly 90 minutes, and combining a visit to Eibsee with a trip up the Zugspitze makes for an unforgettable day. Few places in Europe pack this much visual punch into such a compact area.

Königssee

Tucked inside the Berchtesgaden National Park, Königssee is often called the cleanest lake in Germany. The fjord-like shape - steep cliffs dropping straight into emerald water - gives it an almost Norwegian quality. Electric boats have been the only vessels allowed here since 1909, so the silence on the water is absolute.
The boat ride to the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä, sitting on a small peninsula backed by the Watzmann massif, is one of those experiences that sticks in memory long after the tan fades. At one point during the trip, the captain stops the engine and plays a trumpet toward the cliffs. The echo that returns is worth the entire journey south.

At around 150 kilometers from Munich the drive takes nearly two hours, but Königssee earns every minute of travel time.

Lake Constance (Bodensee)

This one pushes the definition of "day trip" - Lake Constance sits about 250 kilometres from Munich, and the drive takes close to three hours. But for those willing to start early, the payoff is enormous. This is Central Europe's third-largest lake, shared between Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The German shore alone could fill several days of exploration. The island town of Lindau, with its lighthouse and Bavarian Lion statue, is one of the most photographed spots in southern Germany. Meersburg's medieval castle and Friedrichshafen's Zeppelin Museum add layers of culture and history. For anyone curious about what else the region holds, this overview of Sights Near Lake Constance covers the highlights well.
The lake itself has a different character from the Bavarian Alpine lakes - broader, flatter, with a Mediterranean quality on warm summer days when cafes spill onto the waterfront and sailboats dot the horizon.
